Fall Fish Bowl 2019 Results
Saturday morning about twenty four people gathered in Delaware Seashore State Park for a free surf fishing tournament on 3Rs drive on beach. The Fall Fish Bowl 2019 was underway, the water was cold, the waves were huge, but the wind had laid down.
It was a tough day of fishing, well catching, fishing was easy enough. Minus dealing with heavy waves and cold water the day was beautiful. Unlike the previous days, the wind was much better. The storms held off for another day that were predicted for Thanksgiving day. The catch of the day was dogfish, luckily we did have the dog pound calcutta for anglers to compete.
Not one skate was caught all day, to my surprise. Usually you can’t get away from those “trash” fish. Dogfish have been the main catches all week. Even short striped bass weren’t biting. Striped bass were not on our catch list. No reason to stress out an over fished stock and honestly I didn’t expect to see any keepers in the surf. We also don’t allow out of slot fish to be scored anyway, that is illegal per DNREC regulations.
Lines were in at 7 AM and out by 3 PM, most of the anglers stuck it out for the entire day. There were just prizes and bragging rights on the line, no money. “I was going to be out here all day fishing anyway, may as well get into a little fun”. Those that stuck it out met at Iron Hill Brewery in Rehoboth beach for an awards presentation. Everyone was wiped out from fighting waves and cold. You put on that much gear it will suck the energy right out of you. I could see it in everyone’s eyes.
Since we didn’t have any fish caught that would score, we pulled raffle tickets for the prize places. First to third place received their trophy bait boards made by Frets 4 Vets, and everyone received another fist full of Fishbites sample packs and DS Custom Tackle rigs. I didn’t even bother to write down names or take any pictures, everyone had a long day and needed to go home and rest. Including me, it is exhausting watching people surf fish.
Big thanks to Tom Baker at Frets 4 Vets for making the trophy bait boards. If you would like to donate to Frets 4 Vets check out their website. You can also donate via Amazon Smile if you shop online. We didn’t raise Frets 4 Vets any money from this tournament due to not having an entry fee, but DSF will be donating $50 regardless.
Next year we are thinking we will make the Fall Fish Bowl surf fishing tournament a trash fish tourney and start measuring those dogfish for grins and giggles and counting skate for the skating rink calcutta. Because why not.
Check out the Delaware Surf Fishing tournaments for next year in 2020, going to be a great time in the surf. We are adding a kid’s and family division to all Delaware Surf Fishing tournaments that everyone will enjoy.
