Everyone Has A Beach Buggy, Their Favorite Beach Ride For Surf Fishing Jeeps Are A Popular Beach Ride.

There are some cool rides out on the beaches. Some are new, some old, and some are modified beyond their original intentions. Once you find your beach ride, you will want to outfit it to suit your needs for surf fishing. Everyone has a different way of setting up a vehicle for surf fishing. Kevin Farrell sent us his latest beach buggy, he has a long history with different rides since the mid seventies. His latest, a modern beach buggy is simple, clean, and gets the job done.

Kevin … “I have been surf fishing the DE seashore and Assateague since I bought my IHC Scout II in 1977.  Since then two Jeep Cherokees, a Wrangler JK, and my current Wrangler JL have been my beach rides.”

….. This one is a 2018 JL Sahara that is pretty much stock as I ordered it. I added a 2” receiver hitch to the front which mounts my rod rack for a pair of 10’ St Croix and Shimano 8000 surf rigs. I also moved the rear camera to the area next to the rear receiver hitch so I can mount a Thule bike rack on the spare tire. In summer it doubles as a rack to carry sand chairs and umbrellas to the beach.

…. Once I get to CHSP, a set of auto-deflators air me down to 19 pounds and off we go.

…. After a day of surf fishing the beach, I take her through The Waves Car Wash here in Lewes because they have an undercarriage wash. I put a ceramic coating on the paint when I first bought it in 2018  to protect from sand, salt, and sun, so yea, I like to keep my investment nice.

I had to ask, do you have any picture of that scout, they are sweet rides for the beach and one of my favorites …

….. The IHC Scout was a 1977 model with a 304 V8 and a close ratio 4-speed.  I replaced the tire and wheels with a set of white wagon wheels and BFG ’sport truck’ radials what were perfect for the sand.  The factory paint was not very good, so I had it repainted in “ice blue moon dust” Imron (a Lincoln color).  It was the only beach buggy I’ve ever owned that wasn’t white. Sadly, I have no idea where I might look for photos after moving several times. That truck was a beast and I would have bought another if IHC had not discontinued them around 1980.

….. After moving from Annapolis to Lewes, the 2013 a Jeep JK became my beach buggy still sporting the owner fabricated rod rack (at first).
Later, I pared down my equipment and put the current rod rack on the JK.

Thanks Kevin …. One of the things I look forward to with every trip to the beach is what kind of vehicles will I see today. I have seen some wild rigs. There are some great rides out there, many built exclusively for surf fishing. Kevin stayed modern this time with few mods and additions after years of beach buggies.
