Fish move along the coast line and many anglers call that “line” the fish follow, the fish highway. If you look at the edge of the surf beyond the breaking waves you usually see a long slick on the water surface. That is what we refer to as the “fish highway”, because everything is out there swimming along the coast. Feeding, swimming and well, making that “slick”. This is another way to read a beach, look for the “highway” and how far do you need to cast to hit it.
If you have an aquarium, when you feed your fish they poop, same happens in the ocean. That creates the slicks we see at cuts and out front along the beach. No wonder fish swim up current for better oxygen flow. When fish feed on other fish or crustaceans, the pieces and oils help create the slick as well.
One way to find the fish highway, notice where the dolphins feed in a long line. They follow fish for food, and usually are on the outer edge of the highway. They will push fish towards the beach and sand bars to feed, then that slick is all over the water surface.
Cast to the fish highway.
