Rip Current warning signs seen at the beaches in Delaware

A potentially nasty period of beach weather may be ahead for Delaware and a portion of the southern NJ beaches as we move toward Friday and Saturday. The risk for the formation of dangerous rip currents may increase to moderate Friday afternoon in these areas and it is probable there will be a moderate or high risk for the formation of dangerous rip currents Saturday. The rip current formation risk should remain considerably elevated Sunday.

Ocean swells should increase to between 5 and 8 feet late Friday and especially Saturday. Rain will add to the unsavory potential, especially extreme southern NJ and DE.

If this comes to pass, there will be National Weather Service products that highlight the dangers. There is still some uncertainty regarding the wave heights and rainfall. For now, be aware of the risks ahead for swimming along the NJ and DE coasts this Friday afternoon into Sunday afternoon.

Check the NWS rip current forecast page for updates.  The waves were heavy and rather fast today while we were surf fishing.  Rip currents are bad for swimming but can be great for fishing.  Fish the “downstream” side of the rip current and in front of it to find fish feeding on the creatures stirred up by these powerful currents.  Heavy waves will require more weight to hold bottom, you may need upwards of six ounces, and cast beyond the breaking waves. Put your sand spikes on top of the slope of the beach to maximize the height of your line over the waves.  Be careful most of all and stay out of the water near rip currents, they are powerful.

Fish On!!
