Assateague Island National Seashore will be hosting a Beach Clean-Up
NPS Staff (Sept 8, 2021) .. Ghost crab party? Unfortunately, what really happened here is that a ghost crab thought the blue balloon was food and tried to drag the balloon down inside its burrow. Ghost crabs are the scavengers and predators of the shoreline. If they find food, they quickly drag it down their burrow to eat without being disturbed by other ghost crabs or gulls. Sometimes they accidently mistaken marine debris for a snack, as this image shows.
When you visit Assateague Island National Seashore unfortunately you will see plastic pollution and other marine debris washed up on our beaches. Not only does marine debris litter our beautiful beaches, but it also negatively affects our abundant wildlife on land and in the ocean. When you are at the beach, think about the ghost crab and other wildlife next time a balloon washes up on the beach.
NPS staff are always on the lookout for marine debris, but we could use your help! Assateague Island National Seashore will be hosting a Beach Clean-Up on September 25th from 7:00 – 11:00 AM. We hope to see you there and we thank you for helping us keep our beaches clean! Details coming soon for where to meet at the North Ocean Beach. Assateague Island National Seashore
