Yesterday I was at the Millsboro Middle School for their annual health fair talking to the kids about fishing safety.  It was a lot of fun and I noticed that more kids are into fishing than they were last year.   Always good to get out and teach them about fishing.   I am looking forward to next year, big thanks to the Millsboro Middle School for having us back this year.  Don’t forget this weekend is free fishing in Delaware for Saturday and Sunday.  Take your kids fishing you will have a great time.  I guarantee it.  After the health fair I went to Cupola park in Millsboro to do a little fishing and unwind.

Fishing has been decent around here the past few days.  Just depends when and where you fish.  There have been flounder in the Lewes Canal, Broadkill River (lower), Roosevelt Inlet, Inland Bays, Henlopen Pier, and Indian River Inlet caught on minnows and gulp.  A few have been caught in the surf on sand fleas and minnows.  Some people have even used strips of bluefish for bait.  Croakers are thick in numbers all over the place.  Fishbites bloodworms and regular bloodworms have been the best baits.  Spot are being caught on the same baits.  Croaker are still far up the Delaware Bay.  Lots of catfish and perch being caught north as well.

Bluefish are still in the surf and the Indian River bay, but have been showing up less and less.  Shad are thick at the inlet when the birds are working the water.  Today was no exception, except the osprey were outfishing the boats.  I did see a few small blues and short striped bass pulled form the rocks.  White bucktails with white plastics were the ticket at the wall.  There were a lot of boats out today, especially in the back end of the inlet.  Weakfish are still being caught at the Henlopen pier, Broadkill Beach, Indian River Inlet, and Roosevelt Inlet.  Crabbing has picked up even more, and trot lining has produced some impressive catches.   Pufferfish are still in the surf and the Rehoboth Bay.  Burrfish or Spiney Boxfish have made a showing.  Kingfish are in the surf as usual and now the inland bays.  Squid, fishbites bloodworm and crab formula are working well for the smaller fish.  The obligatory “trash” fish; skates, dogfish, rays, and oyster crackers are popping up everywhere, but still fun to catch and are a tug on a line.

Offshore the tuna bite is still good and a lot of thresher sharks have been caught.  A few makos have been brought in to the docks.  Black sea bass and ling are showing up heavier again using clam.  Summer fishing is definitely upon us and you can pretty much count the spring striped bass run as being over.  There are a few straggler migratory fish moving north and there are always resident bass.  I had an unexpected day off work today and did a little surf fishing and checked out a few other areas.  It was a nice day on the water.  Should be a nice weekend to fish and enjoy the outdoors.

Hope everyone has a safe weekend.

Fish On!!
