April’s full moon is known as the full pink moon and will occur on the 22nd at 1:24 AM. The internet has a hoax picture going around about a full green moon. The full pink moon is named for the wild ground phlox or pink moss (herb) that is one of the first spring flowers. Native American tribes also referred to April’s full moon as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon. The fish moon was named for the start of the shad run (spawn) by coastal tribes. Native american tribes would name the full moons for corresponding events in nature. This helped the early settlers or colonials keep track of the growing seasons, especially in a new land. In the southern hemisphere where the seasons are different April’s full moon is known as Harvest Moon, Hunter’s Moon, or Blood Moon.
