Servicing a Penn 7500 SS Series Reel
I had Bill McGee service this PENN 7500 SS reel for me to use this coming fall in the surf.
The reel had a broken reverse lock, was hard to turn, and needed a serious cleaning. Bill McGee does an excellent job servicing reels. He is an avid collector of PENN reels. When you want something done right take it to someone who has the passion and parts.
Some of the parts will need to be replaced. Bill will replace any plastic parts with metal. Some of these parts are available and others have to be made or machined. Knowing collectors in this case helps a great deal, these guys have boxes of parts and gear. Also if we need to have parts made it can be done at a very reasonable cost.
Bill changed drag washers and put them in the correct order. This PENN 7500 SS reel has been run through the ringer with poor storage and barely serviced. Someone put the drag washers back in the wrong order a long time ago.
Bill removed the covering and found one of the problems. If you can’t see it in the picture, there is a serious lack of grease.
Literally hardly any grease in the reel components. This makes it nearly impossible to reel or turn the handle. That is also not good for wear and tear on parts, especially plastic pieces and springs.
Bill McGee as usual did a great job on this reel. It is nice to get these older reels fixed they work like beasts. All you have to do is take care of them and they will last forever. Now I just have to get it spooled with braid and I am good to go, and I might need another rod.
Next week, will be pictures of Diawa reels that almost mimic Penn reels. Bill McGee
