Nor’easter Update

First of all this is not Hurricane Joaquin (which many cannot pronounce), this is a Nor’easter.   I have had to explain this many times today.   The media nationally is not concerned with Dela-where and her skirt blowin nor’easter.  Our approaching celebrity is still partying in the bahamas.

Big time kudos to all the first responders, linemen, and another group no one thinks about … the crews pulling boats today!  Those fellahs had some rough stuff to deal with, I saw some scary videos.  Some of them were walking in waist deep water on piers and boat ramps, while working dawn to dusk and into the night.  Kudos to the river pilots that are keeping those big ships moving in the Delaware bay.  Those folks have a rough job.  The Coast Guard has been on alert all day, huge thanks to them for always being there and not just during storms but always!

We have a lot of roads closed. Route 1 is closed  from Fred Huudson Road to Dewey Beach, and will remain so through at least the next high tide after 1  AM tonight.  Would not surprise me to see it closed all day tomorrow.    The waves hitting the coast have averaged 10 feet today for the most part, but they are moving fast and hard, looked a little scary out there.  The winds at the Indian River Inlet are almost gusting to 50 MPH, tonight.  We have had some major low level flooding.  By that I mean the usual places that flood are seeing much more water than a average nor’easter.  This has been a mild one but with lots of water and steady wind.  Tidal water flooded low areas quickly today, due to heavy winds with rain and run off not being able to drain anywhere.  Ditches overflowed on roads and created a great deal of ponding.  Expect the same thing tomorrow and for at least the next 3 tides, that includes the one tonight.  The Coast Guard helicopter was flying around a lot today and the Ferry ran all day.

Be careful out there and stay safe and dry.

DELDOT …. Closings

Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) officials have announced that due to high water, Route 1 northbound and southbound is closed between Bethany and Dewey Beach (includes Charles Cullen Bridge over Indian River Inlet).

Detour northbound: Route 26 westbound to U.S. Route 113 northbound onto Route 24 eastbound and return to Route 1.

Detour southbound: Route 24 westbound onto U.S. Route 113 southbound to Route 26 eastbound and back to Route 1.
