The Kalmar Nyckel Is Not Coming To Lewes This Summer
Every year in August Delaware’s tall ship, the Kalmar Nyckel comes to Lewes and offers tours sailing around the area. Last year she was “laid up” getting fixed. This year she is not coming due to the pier where she berths is no longer deep enough. Silting has filled in that area and it is only nine feet deep at low tide. The Kalmar Nyckel draws twelve feet of water and will not be able to port at her usual spot at the Cape May Lewes Ferry terminal.
It would cost a lot of money just to dredge that area for the Kalmar Nyckel. The ferry is fine because it draws less water and that area is deep enough. Dredging does occur in that area every few years and that is not scheduled anytime soon. Hopefully next year the Kalmar Nyckel can once again grace our port in Lewes. She is a familiar sight when we are fishing the point after September first.
