Herring Point Drive On Access Upgraded

DNREC crews have been working on some of the dune crossings and drive on crossings over the winter.

(March 5, 2020) … Not long ago parks fixed the road for Herring Point’s drive on beach access. It is much “taller”, filled to make it a smoother ride and not so steep. This will also help with the erosion. The hard pack makes the first section driving on much easier until you get to the soft sand.

The edge is steeper where material was used to fill in the new access road.

Just be careful, you don’t want to go through the dune fence, the drop would roll your vehicle. Not that any of us are driving fast enough to do that, but you never know. The road is wide enough for two vehicles to pass. It is not wide enough to stop and air down and allow two vehicles to pass. You will also notice this year there are dune crossings with rope instead of dune fence or snow fence. This is to allow the sand to pass through the area and not fill in or over the dune crossings. They will also weather a storm better. People crossing them not so much.
