Happy Thanksfishing

Masseys Ditch temperatures this week

Well it got cold fast after that front came through, water temperatures really dropped in some areas, and we have more cold fronts headed this way.  Frost on everything this morning and yesterday, but the fish are chewing.   Hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving, today is a good day to go fishing with the family, or go fishing to avoid the family, whichever suits your needs.   Water temperatures at the ditch in Masseys Landing dropped six degrees in three days. They were peaking at fifty-four and now are peaking at forty-eight, the lowest they have dropped at low tide is forty-six degrees this morning.  Perfect temperatures for striped bass.  Not so much for the clammers who are going out daily or anglers on the rail.  The Delaware bay is still in the lower fifties, takes a while for that big boy of water to change temperatures.  The surf is averaging fifty-one degrees too, again perfect striped bass temperatures.  The ocean looks like a large lake today, it will be easy to hold bottom.

Short striped bass have been the best action all over our waterways, and everyone wants to know have the big migratory fish shown up yet.  The inland bays, all the waterways, the inlets, and back bays of Ocean City.  They are hitting white the most as far as colors.  Seems a white jig head with red eyes and a white zoom soft plastic is the best action for people casting lures.  Haven’t seen much action on bait in the surf we have done better with lures, and again white has been the best color.  We fished the coast guard station yesterday and one of the crewmen told me that white jig head has been working the best.  Dave switched up to one and he started catching again.  I was getting hits on a bunker pattern swim shad but no hook ups.

The rock wall at the inlet has been producing decent short action, the best seems to be on the outgoing tide, but the incoming produced a little yesterday too.  The Oceanic Fishing pier in ocean city is seeing decent shorts and some tautog action.  The Indian River inlet has tautog, but mostly short throw backs.

The surf  is full of all the skates and dogfish you can handle with blues and short striped bass on occasion.  Mostly due to the fact everyone is fishing with bait.  Switching it up to lures will produce more bass but will take more time, such is the nature of surfcasting.   You also need to cast along the beach not just straight out, cross a couple of cuts to get in front of more fish.  The point is a little annoying to drive on with all the mini dunes created by that heavy wind a few days ago.   Herring Point to Gordons Pond has changed its profile.  There are now two large parts of the beach that jut out at low tide, killer rips on the back sides of these spots.  Great places to try some surfcasting.

The inland bays have great short striped bass action, you just have to find a school of fish and then cast to them.  Stay away form the school if you are in a boat you will spook them and they will move, you will spend all day chasing fish around.  Back here darker swim shads, and bucktails work best.  The water is dirtier so you a darker swim shad will work, or a bunker and mullet pattern.  Fishing along the grass banks on an outgoing tide is some of the best action, a rip is nice to fish if you find one but the schools tend to move up and down the banks feeding on the bait as it drops back into the water out of the grass with the receding tide.  There is the occasional keeper striped bass just at twenty-eight inches in the schools, just mind the fact it will shrink in the cooler, so be careful of the size you keep.

Tautog offshore has been good for the boats that can get out there.  The winds have governed that the last couple of weeks, today is perfect.  There are still some sheepshead and even trigger being caught as by catch. Flounder is even a by catch at this point, no one is really targeting them, mostly going for tautog and black sea bass.  There is always white perch fishing in the tidal creeks and rivers if you want a nice lazy day on the water.  Rumor has it large striped bass are starting to show up off of Cape May beaches, I do know north of there they are getting them in the surf and offshore.  If they don’t swim straight off Cape May we may see them in the surf this year, we will have to wait and see and you won’t know unless you are out there.  Have a great weekend, stay warm out there.

Fish On!
