Fishing, well actually catching is and has been picking up for resident striped bass.  That February warm up got them all excited.  Once that happens they tend to not slow down or stop, kind of like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube.

Anglers are catching short striped bass in all the tidal creeks and along the Delaware bay beaches.  Some are catching the occasional keeper striped bass averaging thirty inches.  We have seen some, but very few bass in the surf.  Reason being most if not all of the food is in the creeks and bays.  But if you can get near any inlet, you might get lucky and catch some shorts to keepers on the beach.  They are moving around looking for food.  Especially near the inlet walls, this was a lucky random catch.

White perch caught by Rafael Vazquez

White perch fishing has been better and better and the larger perch are fat. There are a lot of throwbacks but that is to be expected.  Bloodoworms are the hot baits for all the perch and striped bass.

Grass shrimp is good to but catching them with all of the flooded waterways is not going be easy.  You can still catch fish in the flooded waterways,

A well presented bloodworm is an easy meal.  Fish will feed more in these conditions due to the fact they have to use a lot of energy to move around in swifter moving water.  Otherwise they will sit in low flow areas out of the current feeding on whatever washes past them.

Pond hopping has been excellent for bass, bluegills, pickerel, and catfish.  Cats are hitting in the tidal creeks, a good bait for them is bunker chunks, they stink real good.  Soon the carp will start getting active to spawn and then catching them will be an added bonus for a fun fight.

Diamond State Custom tackle has a new addition to the their mullet rig line, spinners.  These are excellent rigs and work well out fishing regular rigs, that little added flash really brings in the fish.  I have been using them for a year and I really like the new addition.

We will be at the Delaware Outdoors Expo this Saturday in Harrington at the Fairgrounds.  Drop by the booth and say hello, sign up for the Chillaware Island Spring Surf Fishing tournament. Check out the Tidal Tables we will have them there as well.

Fish On!
