Fishing and Boating Expo May 23rd

On may 23rd from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a fishing and boating expo at the American Legion post 28 on route 24 near Long Neck and Oak Orchard to honor the memory of Jordan Glatfelter.  This event has been set up to raise money to take veteran(s) fishing on charters or head boats.  There will be 50/50’s, raffles, the legion will also vend food.  The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be there to do boat inspections, you just have to bring your boat up there and literally haul it through an area that will be set up to inspect boats.  DNREC will be there with computers to assist people to get their fishing licenses.  This is a flea market style event but anyone is welcome to set up at $20 per 10 x 10 space.  There are a few vendors already attending such as Diamond State Tackle.  You will need to bring your own table and tents or EZ ups.  Vendors can set up from 6 am to 8 am and then have to move vehicles to a designated parking area.  Boaters will have 30 spaces at $25 to set up any used boats for sale.  Spaces are a first come first serve basis, you can contact Linda Shelly at (302)  945 5387 or email her linda.shelly1@verizon.net  This is a rain or shine event.  If you are looking to unload any used or excess fishing gear this will be the place to make that happen.  The American Legion events are always large and attract a lot of people.  This event is for a great cause, if you are in the area make it a point to drop by and check it out.  I will put up a list of all vendors in the coming weeks and keep everyone updated.  I have a personal interest in this event, I met Jordan Glatfelter a few years ago, and he always was very active on the Facebook page.  He was a great person, and he is sorely missed.  I recently met his father while seal watching at Masseys Landing.  We got to talking (about fishing and life in general) and I asked him to send me a quick note about Jordan and why this event was created in his memory …

It was my pleasure meeting and talking to you on Saturday. I have watched your Web page often.  My Son is actually the one who got me hooked on your page.   The Legion Boat and Fishing Expo to be held in May was the brain child of Ms. Linda Shelly, Linda is my wife’s aunt and my son’s Great Aunt. My Son, Jordan S. Glatfelter, passed away on the 6^th of March 2014 ,   after a four year battle with cancer, Jordan was only 25 years old at the time of his passing.  Jordan loved the outdoors, Fishing was his first love followed closely by hunting.  Jordan and I fished very often at Masseys or at Broadkill  Beach,  and more often than not he would be helping someone with less experience , or less luck,  trying to help them enjoy the fun. We live in Lancaster County, Pa. in a town called Willow Street.  A local gun shop (Morr’s Outdoors)  planned a hunting trip to Texas, Jordan and I were planning on also going,  but Jordan became too ill to travel before that could happen, and passed away shortly thereafter.  The shop owners, Nate and Jerry Morrison, wanted to donate the money for Jordan’s trip to our family.  We decided to donate the money back to the shop to assist someone else with a trip. They (the shop) then decided they would start an annual hunt where they would take a “Wounded Warrior” on a trip free of charge each year for as long as they could. They dedicated the annual “Wounded Warrior” hunting trip in Jordan’s honor.  Linda then picked up on the idea that Jordan’s two true loves were hunting and fishing, she then started the Legions Boat and Fishing expo in the hopes of raising enough money to start a “Wounded Warrior” Fishing trip in Jordan’s honor.

We are members of the American Legion and hope this is one way we can honor not only our fathers and brothers, but any and all veterans who gave so much for us. Although Jordan was never in the military he was into community service, being a Volunteer Fireman in Lancaster County until the cancer started to cause some limitations.   There are so many more stories I could tell you about Jordan and his cancer treatment, and how he made a decision that he was going to live his life his way hunting and fishing  and NOT let cancer control his life. Up until very near the end of his life we continued to fish the Delaware waters.

Jordan’s struggle with cancer, but his courage to live with it, reminds me of another friend of mine, Ron “Jiggy Fins” Kyle.  After hearing the story of Jordan, I immediately knew I had to help these good people with this event.  Please contact Linda if you are interested in setting up to vend or just want to help in general, and by all means please attend.  Donations of any kind for the raffles will be greatly appreciated.  I will keep everyone updated as far as vendors, we would like to see this become an annual event.  Our community has always needed an annual fishing and boating expo.  I think this hits home on so many levels for everyone, that we can all help make this a good time.  It will be a great way to remember Jordan Glatfelter and give back to our veterans to whom we owe so much.
