Come On In The Water Is FIne

swimmers itch delaware, sussex county, cape henlopen state park, delawarebay, clammers itch
From Dave Beebe owner of the Lighthouse View Bait and Tackle at the Cape Henlopen fishing pier … Dragged my butt out of a warm bed and waded into the deadly waters of Cape Henlopen. Knee deep, surrounded by sharks, crabs, jellyfish, sea chiggers, and killer whales, with witnesses.  I raked up a few clams and headed back up to the shop to await the widely advertised onset of the infamous clam digger itch. Stop in this afternoon before 5 pm and check out my legs!

We have a small craft advisory today until two this afternoon.  The water is starting to clear, yesterday the wind was brutal and the Delaware bay looked like chocolate milk.  The ocean beaches had a lot of sand in the waves stirred up by the surge from Maria.  Other than that the water is starting to look better.  The fall like temperatures this morning were a nice addition.  The water is cooling off due to that as well, so we should see some more schooling up of the shorty striped bass.  There are small bluefish every where, even as far up the Indian River as Cupola park.  Those eight inch bait stealers are working overtime wearing out our rigs and bait.  I’m going to have to change the size limit for the Chillaware Surf Fishing tournament so people can actually score a bluefish.   They will hit anything, light gear with a small spoon is a lot of fun, even freshwater spinners like a Panther Martin or a Mepps.  Just make sure you wash those lures well after use, or they will rust out fast.

The Cape Henlopen fishing pier has seen a variety of catches when the wind is cooperating.  Today will be better than yesterday.  Some keeper flounder here and there live lining mullet.  You have to fish around the structure and put in some work.  Dave Beebe did a little clamming this morning and found a few chowder clams for dinner this evening.  Small blues, croaker, kingfish, spot and sand perch have been the most abundant catches.  This sand perch are all over the inland bays as well.  Great bait for stripers and flounder.

Assateague is still producing bull red drum.  There are puppy reds at the Oceanic Fishing pier and the bridges in Ocean City.   Cape Henlopen fishing pier has seen a few caught the last week or so, on both sides of the pier and in the flats area.  All have been in the slot for keeping, and they are very good blackened being my favorite.   Clam or mullet is a good bait for the puppy reds.  Whole spot or chinks are good for the bull reds, and they also like kingfish heads.

atlantic white shrimp, delaware, sussex county, kent county, tidal creeks
Kevin Flaherty … Atlantic White Shrimp, being caught in fast-moving tidal creeks and near grass banks in the inland bays.

Short striped bass action is fun all over the Delaware waterways.  Once you find some schooling bass use that ultralight gear to add to the fun.  Lures are working fine that mimic peanut bunker and mullet.  Sand fleas are good if you want to do some “fleaing” at the rock walls.  The “rockpile” has been some seriously fun fishing with a lot of small blues in the mix.  The tide has been higher than normal pushing bait fish farther into the grass.  Fish the outgoing tide where the water comes out of the marshes and drops off the mud banks.  The fish are sitting there waiting for an easy meal.  There are atlantic white shrimp all over the inland bays, especially the back bay areas.

Head boats in the Delaware bay are getting a lot of small weakfish, croaker, kingfish, and some flounder.  Triggers are still at the Cape Henlopen fishing pier, and the reef and wreck sites.

Crabbing is still good around the inland bays and waterways. The temperature drop hasn’t been too extreme, but the waters are cooling off at night.  Last night the waters dropped six degrees at Masseys ditch in Long Neck.  Otherwise it has been steady in the seventy-four to seventy-six fluctuation range between tides.  After the weekend the weather should warm up and the waters as well.  The Delaware bay near Lewes has the same temperature fluctuation.  It was averaging seventy-five degrees and has dropped to seventy over night.  Since it was in the fifties this morning there is no surprise there.  It will be a cool weekend with mild afternoon temperatures.  perfect fall days for fishing the Delaware waters.   Have a great weekend!
