Cold Moon Was The Last Full Moon Of The Decade
Last Full Moon Of The Decade, The Full Cold Moon, Occurred at 12:12 AM On 12/12
The cold moon is December’s full moon. This year that occurred at 12:12 AM on the 12th of December or 12/12. I just love funny stuff like this that feeds my inner nerd. Mike Givens from Surf & Turf photos took this shot at 12:12 AM on 12/12 in Bethany Beach.
Great timing for the cold moon, with yesterday’s snow which is still around in my woods and on the Jeep for some odd reason. The cold moon is also known as the moon before yule. An old time festival Northern Europeans celebrated that is now associated with Christmas. It is also referred to as the Full Long Nights Moon, since the nights are the longest and the moon is above the horizon a long time.
The moon is now diametrically opposite the low sun and in its highest arc across the night sky. There was a lunar eclipse on December 10th everyone missed, due to the moon’s position on the horizon.
The cold moon has some bad timing this year occurring during the Geminid meteor shower peak, washing out many of the meteors except the brightest.
The geminids peak is Friday the 13th. Between that and the cold moon at 12:12 on 12/12 to end the decade, I’m surprised no one is freaking out, well more so than the usual internet insanity. Then again the week ain’t over yet.
