Angry Seas Minor Coastal Flooding
The nor’easter conditions today were typical and mild.
No big deal, nothing to see here typical nor’easter conditions. Once high tide passed we were good to go. Route 1 got a tad wet on the shoulder. Deldot was standing by with the snow plows. Before you laugh, it’s a great way to push water off the highway into the drainage ditches. It works. Besides our snow was gone this morning. Crews had to go from plowing melting snow last night that turned to water by early morning. Only to go possibly plow actual water. Kudos to Deldot for keeping an eye out on Route 1, and all the hard work. Seems every nor’easter floods her now. Today was mild shoulder flooding. The inland bays rose really fast in the forty five minutes I was down there, but calmed down just as fast.
The sea was typical, big and angry. Storm surge is pushing water to the dune lines. Eroding the face of the northside dune back to a cliff about six feet tall at two this afternoon. Probably taller now. I never went up to Broadkill, I’m sure they got carved off some more. The wind direction mostly north was intense. That helped keep the inland bays from really flooding on our side. Bethany beach definitely saw more water in her back bays to Ocean City. The southside flooded at the inlet at the campgrounds a bit.
I’m sure that newly replenished Bethany beach just took a beating. Technically that is the design, to take a large storm surge and spread the sand in the process. Be interesting to see how it washed around tomorrow or Wednesday.
Found some cool driftwood pieces at the Indian River Inlet by the rail. Beach combing will be off the hook in a few days for sea glass and the buried treasures. The washed up treasures are moving in and out with the waves right now, pushed to and beyond the dunes. I’m sure Navy crossing got much thinner. Will check that tomorrow.
