Tsunami Buoy 44402 Off Coast Triggers “Event Mode”

The tsunami buoy 44402 that triggered an “event mode” on Saturday is going viral on the internet. With speculations from meteors to a submarine hitting the buoy cable.  My personal favorite is Godzilla.   What really happened was a glitch during a routine maintenance.  The National Data Buoy Center reported that buoy 44402 located 130 nautical miles southeast of Fire Island New York, showed a massive ocean level drop on Saturday at 6:30 PM.  Then a few seconds later the buoy registered an increase in ocean level of 180 feet.  No other buoys registered this massive change in ocean levels.  The event mode was triggered by routine maintenance.  The internet rumor mill has been on fire with theories.  Just to put it in perspective, if a wave hit our coast at that height, I don’t think there would be much we could do or anywhere to go.  After all the highest ground in Sussex County is the inlet bridge and the dump, both would be a front row seat.
