Three Seas Hits the Bays
A couple of years ago Sean Cummings got this crazy idea to build a small “house” if you will on a pontoon boat and named it the Hydro Hostel. He did that well I might add, rented it out as an Air BnB, and recently sold it. It now resides in a marina somewhere also as an Air BnB. Very cool idea. I asked the Coast Guard once is there any regulation to what you can put on a pontoon boat. Apparently there is not much at all. I have seen some wild set ups, but these mini houses are sweet.
Sean acquired another pontoon boat, but much larger and went bigger this time. Introducing the Three Seas. More of a mini house boat this time, that Sean, his brother and Dad built together. I watched a lot of the process on his Facebook posts, it was fun to see the progress, now to see if she floats.
They were still in the finishing stages for the interior when I caught up with them the day they launched at the Indian River Inlet Marina in Delaware Seashore State Park. The boys at the marina lifted her into the water and Sean sighed with relief. I Looked at him, he said ” oh good it floats” Then he just chuckled to himself, this was a real inaugural trial.
Nothing like seeing a mini house on the boat lift crane at the marina. She looks much bigger on land, but she isn’t small in the water either. There is a center console on the roof in the back. A single engine powers the craft, she doesn’t need to break speed records. There is a small generator to power the house amenities; air conditioning, water pumps, shower on the back deck, and lights. That is all that was in the plans at the time, knowing Sean that has been upgraded a bit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see satellite TV at some point, a weather station and radar.
The Three Seas is much bigger than the Hydro Hostel. I am really impressed with this newest venture and am looking forward to trying her out for a night or weekend.
Sean Cummings … “After we sold the last one I always said we would build another one. I came across a guy who gave us the pontoon bases for free so I thought we might as well start another one. Would love to take people out for charity whether they were sick or just havin’ a bad week. ” .. ” I Had fun building it, if the circumstances were right I’d love to build another one day. With unlimited budget and I could just have fun with it”
After they dropped her in the marina, she was christened with champagne. The boys loaded up, gave her all the final checks, and the chase boat was at the ready. Off they headed out of the marina to White’s Creek area. I don’t have to mention the amount of heads that were turning when they drove out of the marina, it was all of them. People fishing the rocks at Bubble Gum beach took a long look, there were several WTF is that?? So did the Marine Police when they drove by The Three Seas. Sean and the boys on top, driving her across Indian River Bay, just waving to everyone like it was a normal day. Because when you live on the water, this is pretty much a normal day for us with a side bar.
Now I have to find a toon I can convert to something like this. A floating fish shack would be fantastic, great white north style. Cut a hole in the floor and go ice fishing style in the summer for flounder and the little fishes. Be a good crabbing and clamming deck too.
