The Kalmar Nyckel Will Not Return To Lewes In 2020
Last year we didn’t get to see the Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware’s Tall Ship. She is a common site when we are fishing the point after it opens in September. Usually every year in August the Kalmar Nyckel comes to Lewes and offers tours sailing around the area. Last year and the year before she didn’t visit. Due to the finger pier dock at the Lewes Ferry Terminal where she berths is still not deep enough. Silting has filled in that area the last few years.
Since the Kalmar Nyckel draws twelve feet of water she will not be able to port at her usual spot at the Cape May Lewes Ferry terminal’s finger pier dock.

It would cost a lot of money just to dredge that area for the Kalmar Nyckel, I’m guessing in the neighborhood of a couple million dollars. The ferry is fine because it draws less water and that area is deep enough and maintained. Dredging was just done in that area for the ferry and pilot boats this past year.
Hopefully next year the Kalmar Nyckel can once again grace our port in Lewes. If you would like to visit the tall ship you will have to check her out at the berths in Wilmington and Old New Castle. Also at one of the Tall Ships America events.
