Spring Summer Fall Fishing

I mean … Is summer over already? Did we miss something, like an entire season? This fall like weather in June is wonderful, it is also going to kill us when it gets hotter than the ninth level of hell this summer. I’m digging the weather for fishing, the water temperatures are great. Still holding around seventy four and dropping to sixty eight for the inland bays, and the mid sixties for the Delaware Bay and the surf. This weekend will be warmer but the wind will be nautical.

DS Custom Tackle has a new spot, kingfish, and croaker rig. Mustad J hooks with different colored floats. Perfect for the pier or surf. Available at finer Delmarva Tackle shops

When the boats can get out between storms or avoid the blows we have been having, they are catching fish. Flounder, bluefish, kingfish and weakfish have been the targeted species for the charters and head boats. On a good day they are filling the boxes with decent action. The weakfish numbers are definitely up this year and the keepers are respectable sizes compared to years past. That means big enough to justify keeping and eating a fish over 13 inches.

The surf has been rough and heavy the last few days. The wind is not helping. The surfers have been digging the swell, we are having issues holding bottom some days. There are numerous fish in the surf so long as you are in the right place at the right time. Short striped bass, kingfish, croaker, spot, burrfish, northern puffers, and sand perch for the smaller species. The occasional bluefish, they are mostly offshore now it seems. Skates, rays and sharks are always on the menu. Lot more people are eating skates we are looking for some recipes if you have any to share.

Dillon Walker with a burrfish from the surf. They are big this year. Caught on DS Custom Tackle pill float top and bottom rigs

The short bass action around the creeks and canals is fun on ultralight gear. There are still some blues lurking in those schools. You just have to find them. The flounder action has slowed down for keepers and increased ten fold for throwbacks. Seems to happen every year about this time. The Cape Henlopen fishing pier has some decent action, good clamming and crabbing. However most of the crabs are coming up sponges. Check with the shop to see what the hot bite is up to the minute.

Fishbites bloodworms has been working well in the surf. There are plenty of sand fleas in the surf to dig up and use for bait. Gulp white or chartreuse with or without minnows is doing well for flounder around the inland bays and canal.

Offshore anglers are getting into some great action they just have to be able to get out there or not mind one seriously bumpy ride.
We are in summer fishing mode with fall like weather, Not a bad combination. The crabbing has been excellent. Have a safe weekend.

Fish On!
