Dolphins playing in the ocean … photo by Katrina Fuller

Many people came to the beach this weekend during an awesome Indian summer.  The flies were horrible but people still had a great day at the beach.  Katrina Fuller had a fun time at the beach this weekend and took some killer photos.  She sent us a message about her day.

Katrina …. Can someone tell me if this kind of activity is normal this time of year? I’ve been fishing Cape Henlopen to Indian River for many years and have never had an experience like yesterday! Hundreds and hundreds of very playful dolphins, a couple feeding frenzies that were making huge white cap looking splashes, One wave that brought hundreds of feeder fish onto the beach and the grand finale was a whale breach!! The whale came half out of the water then flopped into the water on it’s back. I didn’t get a picture of the whale unfortunately. Can anyone identify the fish the seagull has? I thought it was a bluefish until I saw the spots. Kinda looks like a trout. Thanks!

Katrina the fish the bird is eating is a bunker, and it is quite the mouthful for that bird.  I don’t know if it caught the bunker or found it floating.  Maybe even stole it from a surf angler at the beach.  The baitfish are being chased up on the beaches by the bluefish and then the birds are going nuts for them.  The whales are feeding on bunker and possible the baitfish which are sliversides.  The dolphins are just playing and having fun they do this constantly.  You got lucky and got to see a show that people rarely see all at once.

Fish on!
