Okay first things first. I went to the open house tonight about the Fort Miles Proposed Draft Master Plan Open House. Only reason I went … again …. was to talk to the Director of Parks Ray Bivens to clear up some misinformation. This is just a proposed phase one and the money was raised by Fort Miles and earmarked a while ago. First and foremost, THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE A NATIONAL PARK THERE. Seriously, that paranoid talk is getting old. Secondly There is not going to be a fence around the new/old complex at all. Thirdly they are not going to charge to enter the Fort Miles Museum. Forth and finally, the parks arenot going to encroach on any wetlands, wildlife, or any new areas. The upgrades will be on the existing footprint of the original Fort Miles. Now there is going to be a new parking lot that will possibly be charged parking and people who go to the museum will have their parking “validated”. Otherwise if you park there to use the park itself or go to the beach, the parking will cost more on top of your entrance fee. So if someone wants to pay twice to park in the park that is their option. That is also only a possibility and not set in stone, the parks are still working on the possibility of charging to park.

So basically, Fort Miles is going to be revamped, or made into a much cooler looking, educational and a user friendly museum. I say it is a win win for the parks and the visitors. History is important to keep alive, for a multitude of reasons. Fort Miles was a huge part of Sussex County’s history back in the day. Keep in mind it was a military base, or basically a small city, one of the largest in the county during its use. You can see the proposed plan images on the state parks’ website and even send in comments. The boards displayed tonight at the open house are on that link and in pictures below. On a side note, the fishing pier, a historical landmark and important part of Fort Miles, will close this winter to have the decking replaced, just a heads up, but the parks are still taking bids by companies to do this job. Any construction firm can bid on this part of the repairs. I hope this helps clear up any confusion that has been spread about the community. Just a suggestion but if you don’t know what is going on never assume. Pick up the phone, send an email, or use the Google, it is a very useful tool.
Fish On!!
