Fin Whale Stranded At The Point
A Fin Whale was stuck on the shoals bayside of the point this morning
Along the shoals in front of the Breakwater East End lighthouse and the bayside beach during low tide This fin whale stranded itself or got stuck this morning at low tide. Not sure presently which happened. Usually whales will beach themselves so they do not drown when they are sick. After all they are air breathing mammals. Just like us humans. Beaching allows them to rest and breathe.
Once the tide came up, the whale moved closer to the point side of the harbor of refuge. The fin whale is still staying in the shallows and kind of stuck, most likely on purpose. MERR is on scene trying to assess the whale’s situation. In the pictures you can see it has turned itself towards the beach. My guess would be it is trying to not drown and staying shallow.
Now the fin whale has moved around the point and is not far from the poles for the closed off section. Still staying close to shore and weak.
MERR will have some decisions to make, euthanizing the whale could be one , and then towing it out to sea before it washes up on shore.
