Dog Day In The Surf

The last few days all we are catching are spiny dogfish and skates.  They are fun to catch but everyone wants the striped bass to show up, it is like the calm before the storm.  The weather the last few days were heavy waves and winds.  We will see more of that through out the weekend.  The water temperatures are decent for the fish and the temps are the same up and down the coast.  The Delaware Bay beaches From Augustine to Beach Plum Island are seeing a lot of schooling bass you just have to be there when they show.  Bunker chunks are working well for all the fish we are catching.  There has been a lot of dolphin action off the coast daily along the beaches.  What they are feeding on we are not sure.

Haven’t seen any bluefish in the surf the past several days.  There are still blues and shad at the Indian River Inlet and short resident striped bass.  They are hitting small spoons, plugs, bucktails, and shad darts.  The boats are doing decent for sea bass and tautog when they can get out, we have had small craft and gale warnings off and on the past couple of days.  This weekend is not looking any better.  The surfers have been enjoying themselves.  As far as the migratory fish there may be some swimming around here and there but the schools have yet to show up and you won’t know unless you go fishing.  Water temperatures are averaging fifty-nine degrees for the surf, and bays.  One thing we have caught, a lot of  are sea gulls getting jammed up in our lines, make sure you have an old towel or bed sheet to help get them untangled, and a pair of heavy gloves.  Do not just cut the line and let them flop around with the line still attached that is cruel.  One of th eones we untangled from our lines had an old line attached, which we also removed.  Incoming tide is peaking in the late morning and low tide is peaking in the late afternoon.

Fish On!!
