Delaware Surf Fishing Beach Trashed Saturday Night
Constant Misuse of Drive On Beaches Could Reduce Access For Surf Anglers and Beach Visitors
Beach Plum Island State Park was trashed over night. Literally there is a bag of trash spread all over the beach, and a fire is still burning. The trash bag was likely spread around by animals (foxes). There is also a truck left behind, stuck in the drive on access entrance. The bed of the truck is full of trash as well. This was discovered early this Sunday morning by Kim Johnson. The truck has Delaware tags before you blame the PA Navy. In fact I wouldn’t blame a tourist at all, this is a local issue and has been for that park for years.
No surf tag … fine
No fishing gear present … fine
Littering … fine
Glass on Beach .. fine
Open fire on beach .. fine
Being a worthless human .. free
The fire on the beach last night was still burning this morning, and full of glass bottles. If that fire sparked up the entire marsh could have been set on fire. Possibly the houses on Broadkill beach.
We found a fire still burning on Beach Plum Island State Park two years ago during a Sunday beach clean up. The following year a pile of pallets and oil left behind to have a bonfire.
We skipped the beach clean up today due to the recent high water by the way. The volunteers would have been farther south today anyway in Delaware Seashore State Park. Rangers have been called and are dealing with the situation.
This is how we lose more drive on access. People trashing a beach area that gets very little attention by patrols for the fact it is so far north of the parks. Not the rangers fault, Beach Plum is just that far up the highway and they can’t be everywhere. Cape Henlopen State Park covers Beach Plum Island State Park. They can’t watch it that well this time of year. Hopefully this doesn’t prompt the parks to close the drive on access. Beach Plum Island State park is a popular spot to fish this time of year. I’m actually surprised the people who live near the park didn’t call in the fire, they usually are the first to complain.
Beach Plum Island State Park is a great place to fish. I hope this situation does not cause the surf anglers to lose more drive on access. This obviously happened last night. It wouldn’t cost too much for parks to put a few cameras at drive on access points. This could have happened at any drive on beach, the reason it happens up at the plum is people know it isn’t watched as much as the other parks. Maybe that will change. The easy fix is to just close the park at night, the whole park, not just the drive on access.
The parking lots in Delaware Seashore State Park with the exception of 3Rs are closed at night. This has helped keep people from tearing up the parking lots. We are losing access to ignorance and entitlement all over this country. Whoever did this has zero cares to give and I hope they get a phone book of tickets and banned from Delaware State Parks for life.
Broadkill Beach residents would love to see this beach and park closed permanently. They are tired of the shenanigans that occur there on occasion, especially the weekends. That would also give them a nice private beach to enjoy, sound familiar?
