Cape Henlopen State Park Point Looks Great

The Point in Cape Henlopen State Park Opened Today.

I met my buddy Andrew Hansen at the point comfort station parking lot and jumped in his truck, Mine is down, don’t ask. Apparently a constantly broken jeep is normal, a jeep thing. I am tired of hearing that. Andrew messaged me at noon thirty,
“Hey the point just opened” ..
I’ll be right there …
I get off at precisely 2 PM …
okay see you at 1:59 PM. ”

We pulled onto the beach, Andrew’s truck was handling a little stranger than usual. “We okay? … Yeah we’re fine is just feels weird.” I just shrug, no worries we get stuck, we get out, not a a big deal, been there done that.

There are few tracks already headed to the point, we are excited and want to fish. I want to see how the beach looks and if the whale is a home for every critter in the park.

The point looks great, a small swale area from the last storm on the top of the point sand area. We are here at dead low tide, about 2 PM today. You can see the rack line is up pretty far, but that is from the last storm surge.

The point looks nice and at low tide there is a lot of real estate.

While I am taking pictures i hear rushing air. Andrew is airing down his truck. I look at him. “Yeah so we may or may not have run the whole way on 25 pounds and two wheel drive, all the way to the point.” It was sluggish, now it was driving like a dream. Back in the day two wheel drive was all they had to drive on the beach.

The beaches are all steep sloped and flat. Which is good but water will wash up pretty far on a higher tide. It is hard to tell where high tide will hit with the beach all washed out. Water pushed into the dunes in a few places.

There were a few people out there today, a couple just happened to arrive as the pipes came down and drove out to the point for the first time ever. Not knowing how long we have all waited to be back out there.

That second bayside point is still there from year’s past. The water was fast along the beach today even at low tide slowing down.

You can see the rack line left after the last heavy high tide washed the beaches over and pushed everything to the dune line. There is a lot of driftwood and trash that needs collecting. We will do Tuesday’s Beach Clean Up at the point.

PVC pipe fence for the closed section bayside of the point. It will open in October.

The PVC pipe fence is across the backside of the point in a straight line to the water.

Spot we caught at the point today with Fishbites

It was a great day fishing the point, we caught one spot and that was it, but it was just nice being out there. We have an entire second summer and fall to fish the point. I’m looking forward to Tuesday, you all enjoy it this weekend.
Oh and watch out for the whale on the point.

Fish On!
