The boys were in full swing on Saturday tying flies and telling stories at the Saltwater Fly Anglers of Delaware fly tie Saturday. The annual dinner was the night before, so in lieu of donuts there was cake.
Mack had a few of the spoon flies he tied, using a fake fingernail for the “shell”. These flies looked like beetles. One of them mimicked a click beetle with the eye spots on the back. That fly would be great for all kinds of pan fish, and bass. They are weighted and move with a wiggle to further mimic a beetle in water. I would imagine in saltwater it would be good for smaller species, like croaker, striped bass, and weakfish, but I could see a blue fish shredding it as well. Bluefish will hit just about anything if they are hungry enough, and they always seem to be hungry.
Frank Danner was tying fresh water nymphs for pan fish, trout and bass. More specifically it was a swimming pheasant tail nymph, say that three times fast. It is a very productive fly when fishing the ponds and streams in Delaware.
All of the boys were tying and giving instruction to people interested in tying or new members. As usual it was a fun Saturday to spend indoors out of the frigid temperatures. These winter weekends are the only time I could care less what the weather is like on a Saturday morning.
