Walked The Old Inlet Bridge Road Today On The Beach
Nor’easters Always Expose All Kinds Of Treasures
The nor’easter continues to eat away at the beaches, each high tide. Some of the old access road for the last Charles W Cullen bridge was buried in the dune after Sandy. Some of it is exposed now on the beach surface. Be careful if you trip, it’s your own asphalt.

I walked on top of pieces of the old access road for the old bridge this afternoon. The white lines and yellow lines are headed in the right direction too. Superstorm Sandy was a wild storm and showed just how easily water can move an entire dune system, in three days. This nor’easter was strong but on a weak tide cycle. A full moon tide would have been horrible. We are still in this one for a solid four days of high tide cycles.

There are heavy chunks of the old bridge metal all over the beaches around the Indian River Inlet. The familiar industrial blah-meh green paint color is still on many of the pieces. Brings back a lot of memories fishing the old pylons, and under the bridge at night. Watching that old paint peel waiting for a bite.
Could have been worse, we could have had a Sandy revisited. This storm showed just how well that dune system works for a strong nor’easter. However had this been during a full moon, the dune line never would have made it. In the same area as the exposed old access road (below) and north. That entire line would have been washed out flat.
It will be interesting on Thursday or Friday to see the new surf fishing structure along the beaches.

The DNREC crews were busy rebuilding the dune system today. These folks have been doing this since before sand and have had a lot of practice. Who said you couldn’t grow up and make money playing in the sand.
