Starting Monday, March 14, the US Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with DNREC will conduct remedial actions at the Standard Chlorine of Delaware / Metachem EPA Superfund Site north of Delaware City that could allow nuisance odors in the area.  Workers will consolidate contaminated soil from the site in a single area that will be capped as part of ongoing remedial action. DNREC’s Office of Community Services advises that the soil consolidation work may cause “mothball-type” odors that could cross the site boundary. DNREC and EPA also advise that monitoring for dust and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will be in place along the perimeter of the site to ensure that, while there may be nuisance odors, there is no health risk to the public emanating from the site. The work will occur over approximately one month’s time, weekdays only, between 7 a.m. and typically 3:30 p.m.
