Locals Summer Has Started

Ryan Corr caught this speckled trout at the point on Sunday on a mullet rig.

Hope everyone had a great labor day weekend and summer. Now it is time for locals’ summer and to do some serious fishing. It is much easier to fish weekends when the summer crowds die down. We will still see more people on the weekends but not like it has been. With kids in school and all the activities and sports starting only the weekend warriors make it to the beach.  Yesterday was the Tuesday after Labor Day weekend and there was a lot of people still here the southside beach was packed.

The fishing has been a little off the hook, if you like the small blues. I have been using a four foot ultralight rod with a one ounce silver kastmaster spoon. They are crushing it and with the drag turned all the way down those ten inch fish really feel like something.  It is a lot of fun when there is little else around for action. The point in Cape Henlopen has been the best place for that action and the beaches farther south have bluefish action which is slower but the fish are bigger.  Just wait for the birds to show you where the fish are feeding. Lot of small flounder along the bayside of the point in the surf. They are hitting mullet rigs, cut bait, and even our spoons.  We were fishing Saturday and this kid near us who was seriously putting in some time and effort, had a nice bend in his rod, and he landed a speckled trout.  It was nice specimen that hit his mullet rig. We figure they might be feeding on those small bluefish.

small flounder were hitting spoons and mullet rigs this weekend at the point.

The surf is mostly bluefish, but spot, croaker, kingfish, small striped bass, puffers, and of course skates, dogfish and sharks are being caught. Fishbites or real bloodworms are the best baits. Sand fleas are working well too.  The Indian River Inlet has been producing bluefish, short striped bass, tautog, and the occasional trigger. Still seeing some sheepshead here and there as well. You can use lures like swim shads, speck rigs,or bucktails for the bass and blues. Sand fleas are good for the trigger, tautog, and sheepshead. The Cape Henlopen fishing pier is producing a good amount of keeper croakers now and it is about time. Spot are being caught as well as small weakfish and those tiny bait stealing blue fish. Some keeper flounder but mostly shorts.

Summer season might be over but the fishing will continue into the fall and then the big bass will hopefully show up. We will have to wait and see.
