Kalmar Nyckel in the Harbor of Safe Refuge

The Kalmar Nyckel arrived in Lewes this afternoon, and will be here until September 7th.  This is Delaware’s Tall ship and is always a very educational ride and adventure.  Public sails start on August 4th, and for one day only, August 16, she will be sailing from Wilmington’s Dravo Plaza at the Riverfront.  Costs are $60 for adults and $40 for children ages 17 and under.  I am taking a couple of trips this year I always do and it is a lot of fun, you learn a great deal and get a feel for what travel was like back in the days of the sailing ships.  I still can’t convince them to let me fish her.   She is berthed near the Cape May Lewes Ferry at the small dock, and you can also take tours of the ship itself for a small fee.  when she passes the point in the fall it is a spectacular site to see her on the water, especially in contrast to the ferry.  When modern meets old school.

A common sight when the point opens is seeing the Kalmar Nyckel off the coast.

These folks are also looking for your help.  “Do you have extra LEGOs cluttering your garage or basement? We are looking for new or used LEGOs to build ships with our Little Mates! If you’d like to donate your LEGOs please bring them to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation and ask for Ginny Hanna. Or, mail them to 1124 E. 7th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801, Attention: Ginny.”    I don’t imagine you could just show up with Legos where the ship is berthed but you can always ask.  Treat yourself and the kids to a trip through history and check out the Kalmar Nyckel you will be impressed, that I can promise you.  The ships decor and craftsmanship of that decor alone will impress anyone.

Fish On!!
