Full Snow Moon Feb 3rd

Tomorrow night is the full snow moon.  Named for  the fact February is usually heaviest snow month.  Native tribes of the north and east called February’s full moon the Full Snow Moon.  Other tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, because harsh weather conditions made hunting difficult in their areas.  Many tribes kept track of time from lunar cycles and thus named the moons that would correspond to events in their areas or regions.  Some would have a name for each of the 12 moons and others would only have names for 6 or 7 of those lunar months.  Sometimes certain names would change each year, and different tribes had different names.  Sometimes the names were the same but would be different lunar cycles depending on natural events in their areas.  The harvest moon is a good example as it would differ in regions to represent the time period closest to the autumnal equinox.  Common names for full moons we use today came from the Algonquin tribes that populated the New England to Lake Superior areas.  These are the names the colonial Americans adopted and we still use today.   Full moons have been traditionally associated with insanity, hence the terms lunacy and lunatic.  This is however a myth and is more of a psychological phenomenon and not an actual physical one.  However we do see a lot of craziness during full moons, as well as decent fishing at times.
