DNREC Closes Horseshoe Crab Fishery For 2016

DNREC announced today that the 2016 horseshoe season will close on October 15th.  “In accordance with 7 DE Admin. Code 3214, based on recent fishery performance and landings, the Department has established that the horseshoe crab fishery is closed effective 12:01 AM October 15, 2016 to prevent exceeding Delaware’s annual quota allocation.  After this date and time, it is unlawful to harvest horseshoe crabs during 2016.”   Horseshoe crabs are harvested for medical research and bait for eel traps.  The blood of the horseshoe crab is used in cancer research.
