This Saturday will be the closest the moon has been to the earth this year.  August’s full moon is a perigee full moon this means the moon will be nearest to the earth in its orbit.  This has become known as a super moon and it can affect tides more drastically than normal full moons.  There will be two more of these moons in September and October.  Different native american tribes had names for August’s full moon.  The “Sturgeon Moon” because the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full Moon. They also called August’s Moon the “Full Green Corn Moon.”

Other full moon names August are the Wheat Cut Moon (San Ildefonso, and San Juan), or “Moon When All Things Ripen” (Dakotah Sioux) or “Blueberry Moon” (Ojibway).   The moon last night was very bright and tonight and tomorrow night will be even brighter.  Night fishing will be much easier as far as seeing the next few nights.  Keep in mind the larger predatory fish like striped bass prefer to stick to the shadows during full moons to ambush prey.  Many of the smaller fish do not mind the bright moon light and some feel it make for better fishing.  Either way you feel, it will be a great weekend to spend the nights looking at the Full perigee moon.  All we need is a few shooting stars to compliment the moon and that would be a nice bonus.  I see at least one every night after midnight.

Fish On!!
