Ancient Hieroglyphs Discovered On The Dune Cliffs Of DSSP

Sand that has piled up from the dunes collapsing.

Yesterday I was at the south side beach at the Indian River Inlet just checking the water and surf conditions.  Tossing a line in here and there at a few choice cuts.  While I was fishing and looking for sea glass, I noticed the dunes are starting to give way and create piles of sand along the face of the sheered off areas.  Then I noticed there are carvings on the face of the dunes that were  sheered off by the recent Nor’easter.  Many of them were pictures of strange animals, and I thought to myself, those look like hieroglyphs.   Before I called the state’s archaeologist, I contacted the rangers.  Apparently people are carving images into the sand with their fingers and writing on the dune faces as well.  (Yes …  I already knew this but wanted to gt your attention).

Some of the things written are rather graphic and foul and the parks have had to scrape the dunes to remove the images, creating more damage.   Just a heads up but it is illegal to deface the dunes and can carry a fine as low as $107 and upwards of $250 plus for damages.  The latter fine is actually a serious one since you can be charged by the foot for damage to the dunes under a beach preservation regulation.  Please stop writing on the dunes and stay away from the dune “wall”, that sand could easily give way and bury someone very fast.  That would no be a very pretty sight to see.  Do not try to climb the dune face as this is considered the same as walking on the protected dunes.  If you see anyone doing this please call the ranger dispatch number, 302 739 4580.  I know it seems trivial to be fined for writing on the dune face, but these have been damaged enough by mother nature, and we can’t prevent what she does, much less fine her.

Fish On!!
