I had to hit the point after it opened today, not just to see how it fared after the storm, but also to get a line wet. If it weren’t for the fact the beach looks different and the point has changed shape it would be like any other day. The drive on was uneventful but a shock as to how much beach is gone and how flat it looks. Except for the big pile of sand at the beginning of the beach, the Duke boys almost came out in me. The water is murky brown, like that apple cider with the all the “stuff” in it. There are tide pools everywhere, these will fill in soon, but it made wading a little difficult. The pools are deep in some spots and you can’t see the bottom. Then there is the added bonus of loose sand that you sink up to your knees in, in a nano second. It was a fun day of tossing metal to the outer edge of the sand bars. No birds working the surf, mostly just standing around like they were waiting for something, or just happy there wasn’t any wind. The point was completely washed over so it looks a little surreal, and untouched. There aren’t even any wind or water marks, just smooth as a baby’s bottom. A few people were parked on the bayside, and there were beach combers all over the place. I found some nice sea glass and Delaware diamonds when I was walking the surf casting spoons. I didn’t see any fish breaking the surface and no one else caught anything. The drive on was uneventful but a shock as to how much beach is gone and how flat it looks. Except for the big pile of sand at the beginning of the beach, the Duke boys almost came out in me. You have to watch your six when you are on the point near the bay side. The incoming tide fills the ocean side beaches up first. On the way in the tide was incoming and about four hours form high tide. I kept thinking this could get real interesting or wet at high tide. When I left the water was reaching within fifteen feet of the dune fence in some areas. I was driving on the new beach slope and it was a good twenty degree incline, or at least felt like it, again the Duke boys came to mind. Eventually that will change as the waves reshape the beach, but for now the beach will get a little skinny at high tide. I saw the US Coast Guards’ ship, the Marine Protector-class coastal patrol boat, that baby has two big deck guns. Because nothing says pull your damn boat over like two fifty cals.
I dropped by the pier on the way out, saw zero mullet and lots of tiny bluefish breaking the surface. You could see about a foot into the water there. Chris Kramer was at Indian River Inlet today watching guys catch tautog one after the other, a few keepers and several throw backs in less than an hour. He said he was headed to get some gear to fish for them because these guys made it look easy. We all know that is a lie. On a scale of one to ten those things are a level twelve pain in the rear to hook, but oh so good to eat. It is why many anglers torture themselves trying to catch them, it is an art. I get to do that on Friday, at the wall, in a boat. Up north in the Delaware bay the striped bass action is back on, they are feeding heavy on spearing. Jim Davis slammed a nice twenty six inch striper today, at an undisclosed location. Well, he told me, but didn’t want any company, so I will be visiting him tomorrow. Understandable, some areas up north can get crowded with only two people. Nice to know the bass are still feeding heavy. Before the heavy winds and storm with no name, the bass were feeding and schooling up. We were seeing the same action down here in the Inland Bays, I am sure that will fire right back up in a day or so when we take a boat out. The striped bass and bluefish action have been great in the Chesapeake bay. It was nice to get back out and fish today, after days of cabin fever and crazy winds.
Fish On!!
