#savethechunk for the sake of future generations.

A grass roots movement started on Facebook, October 13th around 10 PM has taken a community by storm in less than twenty four hours.  Now why would that occur?  Well the Punkin Chunkin organization is now looking out of state for a venue to host their event.  After two consecutive years of being canceled in Dover, the organization has decided they need to find a venue that is favorable to their needs, and insurance that is reasonable.  Non profits in Delaware are not protected from lawsuits with a cap.  The #savethechunk movement is hoping to convince legislators to vote for Brian Pettyjohn’s bill to put a cap on lawsuits against non profits.  This bill was blocked by the Delaware Trial Lawyers association in legislation last year.  Due to this lack of protection, Punkin Chunkin organizers are starting to look out of state.  The movement #savethechunk is trying to convince Delaware legislators  keep the “chunk” in Delaware, a tradition that was started in Sussex county and wishes to remain there.  The organizers themselves do not want to leave Delaware, but due to these circumstances they have no choice but to look elsewhere.  How can you help?

According to Frank Payton a second generation chunker and member of the Punkin Chunkin board …. “We need a place to hold the 2016 chunk.  Any and all landowners with property that will allow us to chunk a pumpkin close to a mile need to come to the table to talk. Our lawyer assures us that we can work up an iron-clad contract that will help protect the farmer. We would very much love to keep this a Delaware tradition, but with no caps in Delaware, people just don’t want to deal with the hassle.  At this time, we need to weigh all options, which is the best interest for Punkin Chunkin. We can get an insurance policy that will protect the landowner, we can have a contract drawn up that will protect the landowner, we just need to start talking for next year.”

If anyone can help the organization get in touch with landowners, please contact Frank Payton …  it@punkinchunkin.com.  You can also help by supporting Brian Pettyjohn’s bill, now known as the “Punkin Chunkin Bill,”   to put a cap on lawsuits against non profits.  Many local businesses including this one (DSF) lost out on revenue from Punkin Chunkin being canceled this year, as did many other vendors and an entire community.  A farmer lost out selling 7,000 pumpkins, specifically grown for this event.  We will keep you updated with any new information.  In the mean time check out the Facebook page Save The Chunk and use the #savethechunk hastag phrase to help spread the word.

Chunk On!!
