Old Bay Hot Sauce Taste Test

The new Old Bay Hot Sauce sold out online in hours on the day of its release. No surprises there, and people are selling bottles of it on eBay for $50. Also not a surprise. So the question really boils down to, how does it taste?

My buddy Corby Fulton hit a shop in New Castle county Delaware tonight and picked up a ten ounce bottle of Old Bay Hot Sauce for $14.99. He took it home and gave it an honest taste test. Corby likes spicy food, and hot sauces.
Corby … “I just got home and plan on tasting it in a bit. I’m a hot sauce freak so I’ll give you my opinion. If drinking sriracha with my coffee is wrong, I don’t want to be right.”

Taste test:
Initial glance once cap is off, is that it has this restrictive cap.
Trying to “dash” it was difficult. Not a lot came out.

DSF … Is it like Pete’s for consistency?

Corby … Definitely not Pete’s with Old Bay!
Took the shaker top off and poured it into a few chips

Consistency is not watery like Tabasco, but not a thick BBQ sauce either.

Taste wise:
Initial thought was of a bloody mary that had a lot of old bay in it. Not sure if I agree with the “sweetness”. More sour and you also get the salt of old bay.
Mild smoke to it. A lot of tomato notes.
Pretty good heat.

Not crazy a burn, but definitely has a good heat.
Will be great on eggs, I think.

DSF … What would you compare it too??
Corby … I’d say it’s V8 juice with a dash of liquid smoke and old bay with heat.
Not sure I’ve had a hot sauce that I could compare it to honestly. It is unique that’s for sure. Like I said. It’s a very spicy Bloody Mary. Just missing the vodka.

Not sure if you can tell but I’m sweating my face off .

DSF …. So make a drink … maybe

Corby .Vodka shot with a dash of that in it!!???

DSF … Sure why not …

Corby … Just did a shot of Tito’s with two dashes and it’s awesome!! Gotta drink some tequila to cool off.

Shot of Tito’s Vodka with a little Old Bay Hot Sauce for the win

Conclusion ….
Definitely good, but overpriced. Has its place on the shelf.
Probably good on oysters.

Well there you have it from a connoisseur of hot sauces and Bloody Marys. When Corby cools down, we will see how Old Bay Hot Sauce pans out on other foods throughout the weekend. In the meantime since it sold out in hours, unless you want to shell out upwards of fifty bucks on eBay. You might want to wait until it shows up in stores. Hopefully at the MSRP of $12.99.
