North East Winds Will Continue Into October

Sea turtle washed up on South Bowers beach, MERR was notified yesterday.

There is a Coastal Flood Advisory until September 28, 01:00 AM EDT, I imagine that will be moved up a few days as the week progresses.   The winds have been heavy for the past week and will continue into next weekend.  We are looking at upwards of twelve foot seas on Thursday.  The winds will be a steady fifteen miles per hour and increase to gale force by Wednesday.  We have rain chances from twenty to forty percent throughout the week.   The beaches have been taking a pounding, but will survive.  I imagine beach combing will be amazing once this has let up, right now water is washing to the dune line at high tide and will probably continue to do so for a few days.  Water will also continue to stack up in the inland bays.  Light flooding in low areas will occur.  Especially on the windy side of the bays.  If you are beach combing or just out there, keep an eye out for stranded or dead animals on the beaches.  I saw a dead sea turtle yesterday at South Bowers beach. Please contact the MERR Institute (302 228 5029) for any strandings or washed up marine animals, texting the details of the location is preferred.  Heavy seas and winds tend to push all kinds of things up on the shoreline and beaches.  Be careful if driving on the beaches this week.  Sometimes small boards that wash up have nails in them, and there is always the occasional glass bottle.  The water has smoothed out the beaches in some areas and carved them up in others.  The tide pools are filling up as water washes up beyond the normal high tide mark.  The full moon will add to the high water the next couple of days.  Fishing will be a chore but possible.  We will have to wait and see how the weekend will look in a few days for the Cast For A Cure Tournament.  We will keep you updated as the week progresses.  If you have a boat in the water make sure you check your mooring lines and bilge pumps.
