Snood Hook

The term snood hook or knot is the United Kingdom’s name for our American version, the Snelled hook, or snell knot. A snooded hook is the hook and line that is attached to the main rig line, that we call a snelled hook.

The term originated with a Scottish name for a ribbon or band used to hold a woman’s hair in place. It also happens to be the red skin on the beak of a male turkey. You’re welcome for whatever that knowledge is worth to you. It also refers to a short piece of horsehair, sea-grass, gimp, or gut used to tie a hook into place.

Snelled hooks are available in premade packs, usually six per package, with twelve to eighteen inch lengths of line and a loop on the end. The line is either monofilament or fluorocarbon. Mono being the most popular due to cost differences. Pick a hook size or species and you will find it available in snelled hook packs.

Making your own is easy, just learn to tie a snell knot, and make your own “snooded hooks or snelled hooks.
