This morning high tide filled the pools up to the dunes at Fenwick Island State Park. As of right now middle and south crossing in Fenwick Island are still closed. York crossing (also known as south Bethany crossing) is open and is the only drive on access for Fenwick Island State Park. The other drive on beaches in Delaware Seashore State Park and Cape Henlopen State Park are open, but these saw more water than usual due to extreme high tides. The full moon in Perigee also known as a super moon is creating these higher than normal tides. It is possible the parks will have to close the drive accesses in Fenwick Island State Park again tomorrow morning before high tide at 8:30 AM for flooding. There were a lot of vehicles stuck in wet sand down there this morning. You do not want to drive through these tide pools.
If you have ever walked in these the sand is like quick sand, and just walking through it you will sink above your knees. Driving through this is bad idea and you will sink to your frame in a nano second. The parks will close the gates to the entrances if they need to shut any of the beaches down and possibly reopen them after tide has subsided but it still takes time for the water to drain. If anyone remembers last year when this happened in Ocean City the tide pools broke through the beach and carved a huge gully with rushing water. It was so strong it almost sucked a couple of people out to sea and looked like a raging river. That is another danger when these pools break through the beach barrier and start to drain, that is a lot of water and it has to go somewhere. Just draining through the sand itself can take all day. If you get stuck between the ocean and the pools wait for a clear spot to drive across, do not try to drive through the water. Sometimes the water will wash over a few hundred yards away but fill in the low areas behind you so be wary of your location. I would imagine it is going to be bad the farthest you can go north on 3Rs beach as well. High tide is at 9 PM tonight, if you are doing any night or over night fishing, keep this in mind. Also be wary of heavy rip currents.
Fish On!!
