We are five hours away from high tide and the water is up already.
If you are beach bound today the wind is howling and the sand is a blowing. Hurricane Teddy may be offshore but we are getting the effects. I wouldn’t worry about the hundred foot waves some Facebook pages are showing, that is just sensationalism for traffic.
The water is already up higher than a normal high tide. We are five hours away from high tide too, (12:30). If you are on a beach be prepared to move your vehicle. The point has that freshly washed and blown over look and will definitely flood at noon if not sooner. “It was pretty skinny driving of yesterday”
Surf fishing has been rough but there are fish around. Let your gear roll around in that heavy surf wash. A sand flea on a four or six aught hook and a three ounce drag or bank sinker will work great. You have to hold onto your rod the whole time. When the gear washes back in retrieve and cast again. Holding bottom in these waves is pointless, and nearly impossible. The winds will lay down before the heavy surf will. Keep an eye on Surf Captain for wave information. You can do the same with a top and bottom rig.
Beach combing will be much better in a couple of days but you never know what you will find washed up an a beach. You never know what kind of beach treasure you will find.

- WHAT…For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 5 to
8 feet. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, up to one foot of
inundation above ground level expected in low- lying areas near
shorelines and tidal waterways. For the High Rip Current Risk,
dangerous rip currents. - WHERE…In New Jersey, Atlantic Coastal Cape May and Coastal
Atlantic. In Delaware, Delaware Beaches. - WHEN…For the High Surf Advisory, until 6 AM EDT Tuesday. For
the Coastal Flood Advisory, from 9 AM this morning to 4 PM EDT
this afternoon. For the High Rip Current Risk, through Tuesday
evening. - IMPACTS…At this level, flooding begins on the most
vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, and along
inland tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are
possible. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and
localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best
swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A Coastal Flood Advisory means that minor tidal flooding is
expected. Minor tidal flooding often results in some road
closures. Usually, the most vulnerable roadways will flood.
Do not leave your vehicle at a location that is prone to tidal
flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flood waters. The
water may be deeper than you think it is. You will be putting
yourself in danger and your vehicle may be damaged, leading to
costly repairs.
Visit the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service at
water.weather.gov/ahps for additional water level and flood
impact information for your local tide gauge.
Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to
dangerous surf conditions.
Entering the surf is discouraged. If caught in a rip current,
relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in
a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face
the shore and call or wave for help.
Time of high total tides are approximate to the nearest hour.
