We did our weekly beach clean up Sunday at Beach Plum Island State Park. This is a small beach, but it can collect a lot of garbage due to Delaware bay debris and currents. Especially after a storm.
16 people and snoopy the beagle, managed to get a couple bags of trash off the beach. Which was blown rather clean of debris. The sand moving around in the wind tend to bury trash, as does the water pushing it around. We always find trash, the little pieces of plastic are the worst and numerous.
We steered clear of the closed section, because, that is federally closed section for nesting shore birds. That area has been closed for a long time, but still sees some traffic. There are a few people that volunteer to keep an eye on the bird boundary section. Parks should just put up some big pylons like at 3Rs and call it a day. That PVC pipe and string doesn’t exactly deter people from walking to the old ship wreck on the beach.
We didn’t find any noteworthy trash like syringes or other items. But the fact we always find trash is noteworthy enough. Big thanks to everyone for coming out and also Iron Hill Brewery for the amazing food.
Next week we will meet at Cape Henlopen State Park at point comfort station crossing. Where the small bath house is located below the ship tower. Matt Carter from Quest Kayak may start bringing his 14 passenger 4×4 van to help us out on days he isn’t using it, that would be great to cart everyone back on the longer beaches. Many of us like to walk back and look for more trash and treasures.
