Every year around the 4th of July weekend, the Amvets in Long Neck, Delaware hosts the Long Neck Crab races. These are run by the Sons of the American Legion. “All monies raised are donated to the host venue and local charities” … Judge Mike (Enard). Charities include … Boys and Girls Club of Oak Orchard, Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, MidSussex Rescue, and Amvets. This is one of my favorite events now and I will never miss one it is hilarious to bet and watch.
Without a doubt, this is the most fun you will ever have playing with your food. Spectators bet on the crabs for each race or heat. Winners divide the money won up and the rest goes to the charities. It is a lot of fun and people really get into it. You are winning around four to five bucks each race (crab), but that doesn’t decrease the excitement or competition. Some of these folks really get into these races. Listened to lady cuss a crab for losing, he was steamed up later.
The winners and losers are all steamed up at the end of the day. One would think to let the winners go, but they are probably the best tasting crabs.
The race is simple. A chute is loaded with ten crabs with numbers on their back. Then Judge Mike does a countdown usually with kids helping. Once the chute drops the crabs scurry along the track to the bottom. First crab to drop wins. Some crabs get stuck on each other, and start fighting. Literally watched a crab grab the lead crab, tear off two of its legs, then left it there, and won the race. There are no rules for crabs trying to take out their competition. New crabs are numbered for each race or heat.
Keep an eye out for this next year it is a really fun time and a great way to raise money for local charities. There are all kinds of activities for the kids, it is entertainment for the entire family. There is food available and adult beverages of course. A great time in Long Neck, Delaware
