Thursday Evening Weather Update, Be Careful Out There

Everyone has eyes on “Flo” and we (delmarva) should as well.  The conditions predicted into Sunday are what we just dealt with.  The waves at the beaches went to the dune lines and then some at high tide.  We have been getting storm surge from Florence for days, but today it increased.  We are already full of water, we don’t need anymore.  High tide is 5 hours away at 12:20AM.

Hurricane FLorence path as of 5 PM Thursday the 13th

This will be just like last weekend with Gordon.  We will have rough waves into Wednesday or longer with east winds.  Florence is projected inland and then will come north and keep giving us rain and wind.  Just like Gordon did and at the same frequency or a little more, and a day or two or longer.  Add that to what is already happening now and you can get the picture of a beaten up coastline, dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding.

The surf is going to be unsafe for swimming for several days.  The surfers know what they are doing, well most of them  Keep your safety and surroundings in mind if you decide to play or surf fish.  Yes, people, including myself have tried out the surf fishing, you need a Buick to hold bottom.

Rip currents can happen fast especially when the sand is washed out under your feet.  This make wearing waders dangerous if you go into the water.  The sand in the swales will be “quick” sinking in it can throw off your balance fast and then you are in the water with your feet or legs stuck in deep sand.  Right in the surf line where the waves are crashing through.  On an incoming tide especially this would be a bad place to be stuck.

Rehoboth Beach at 6:45 PM

So despite the “hype” this is why we get concerned with storm conditions here or anywhere by the coast.  We all like to go play in the water or even fish.  Keep an eye on the conditions and check your six all the time.  Getting hit by debris at the beach is another concern.  Lot of wood is out there from dune fences, piers, and steps.  A lot of the boards have nails in them, which makes getting hit by one doubly bad.  Now you are stuck knee-deep in a swale, with a board stuck to your leg by a nail, and now a wave is coming at you.  Meanwhile your friend is taking a video of Poseidon kicking your butt.  Stay safe and be smart.

I can’t wait to go beachcombing!  If you want to fish look for out of the way places in the canals and creeks.

Fish On!
