Monday Not So Fun Day

GALE WARNING … The wind is still an issue and will calm down as the day progresses, but not by much.  It isn’t going to stop by any means, but it will lay down a bit and shift directions.  However we will still be dealing with constant winds, angry seas, and flooding back bays.  Nor’easter like conditions for the most part.  Minus the actual nor’easter.

Massey’s Ditch water temperatures this week

The wind shift should take some of the pressure off the inland bay communities on the west side of the bay (Oak Orchard and Long Neck).  The southeast shift will help a little, but will still push some water into the inland bays, which are pretty much full at this point.  Oak Orchard has the evacuation areas open, but they are flooding as well.  There is a back way out of the neighborhoods that is opened when the bay floods.

The water temperature in the inland bays has dropped to seventy-one degrees from eighty-four degrees in four days.  The water temperature in Massey’s Ditch was fluctuating between eighty and eighty-four degrees until the storm hit and then it just dropped fast.

Bethany Beach at 6:20 AM Monday Sept 10th

Waves have been pushing onto the beaches all night long, and that is exaggerated more by the constant east wind.  High tide is three and a half hours away (9:45 AM).  The beaches are going to have a new look when the water subsides.  I doubt this weekend will be any better.  Florence will be throwing bands of water off onto Delmarva from the ocean.  That means a lot of water.  The weather we have now is what is left of tropical storm Gordon and some ocean surge from Florence..

ocean city, gordon, dunes on boardwalk, storm damage
Ocean City has dunes on the boardwalk

Ocean City has a new dune system on the boardwalk.  That is the norm for there, crews will start cleaning it off later this morning I would imagine, or maybe wait until the wind stops moving the sand around so much.

Stay safe and smart when traveling, there is ponding water everywhere.  Places that normally drain are holding water, along roadways, and especially at high tide.  We are going to get wet most of the week off and on.  Expect the drive on beaches to be closed for a couple of more days, and possibly into next week.  On a side note fishing at the Cape Henlopen pier at high tide has been great for spot.
