Marsh Fire On Route 1 Today
The marsh caught fire today just below the Charles W Cullen bridge on the southbound side of route 1. You would think with the high water this wasn’t possible, but it doesn’t take long for that dead grass to dry out in high winds and some sunshine. There were four sections of marsh and brush that caught fire according to the Bethany Beach Fire Company.
Route 1 southbound was closed until first responders from Bethany and Millville fire companies could get the fire under control. It took about an hour and then traffic was allowed to pass in the left lane.
What started the fire is unknown, but in the past fires like these have been caused by sparks from the power lines, according to sources. If you saw the power line in Ocean City that was arching over the weekend, this is a very possible cause. When high winds and rain “mix” with power lines you can actually hear the electricity crackling through them. Throwing sparks would be a good explanation.
