Fishing Report

Steve Charles … Caught this at Cape Henlopen on Sunday on a mullet rig. Had the whole family with me, a perfect Father’s day!

Well now it has been an interesting week, from whales washing up on beaches to capsized boats.  Never a dull moment here at the beach.  The weekend is looking decent for fishing I think Sunday will be the best day.  No flies will be a bonus the last few days have been horrible.  Like, I am not going to the beach today horrible.  Our Gnuex More Gnaughty Gnat spray keeps those biting marsh flies off of you.  You can order from us online or pick it up locally at PC Rods in Milton or Fenwick Tackle.  Greenheads are out now in full force as well, that started up not long ago.  Other than flies it has been a pretty regular week here at the beach.

Flounder action is hotter offshore than inshore or the inland bays.  The old grounds has been great for flounder, so has sites 9,10 and 11.  The action in the Lewes canal is okay but yo have to work for a fish.  You have to really put in some work for a keeper right now.  The Delaware Bay beaches are seeing some decent flounder action from Beach Plum to Bowers Beach and Bennetts Pier.  The action is not heavy but people are catching.  Minnows and gulp have been the go to baits.  Mummichogs for the minnow but some are having luck with the striped killifish.  Many say those do not catch fish but others say different.  Probably depends on the fish’s preference that is biting.

Weakfish action around the Delaware Bay is great if you like spike trout.  There have been some keepers and decent ones for once.  Captains Lady charters out of Bowers got into them a few days ago.  The Henlopen pier is seeing a decent amount and so are the ocean beaches to the south.  The unicorns are among us, we just need them to grow bigger.   They are hitting all the top and bottom rig baits you normally use.  Squid, clam, cut bait, or fishbites.

Striped bass are still hitting along the beaches, at night mostly.  However a few nice ones have been caught during the day.    Indian River Inlet has seen some decent keepers here and there, but mostly it is short bass action.  Which is a blast.  That action is happening up north in the Delaware Bay in a lot of the tributaries and tidal creeks.  Striped bass slot season for the Delaware Bay starts July first.  Nothing like hammering slots all summer, and you can keep them.  You can keep two striped bass in the 20 – 25 inch range from July first to August thirty-first.  One area that is also considered a tributary is the Lewes Canal from the train bridge to the Roosevelt Inlet.  That whole area is nothing but structure for  those bass to hunt for food.  Fishing the evenings into the night in the Lewes Canal into the Roosevelt Inlet can produce some seriously fun action.  Canary Creek will have decent action as well.

Where are the big blues?  They have hit the road for the most part, there are some smaller schools of large snappers around.  The bigguns may be farther out offshore or in the Delaware Bay but they have vacated the inland bays and along the beaches.  Summer snappers are here for the rest of the year.  Fun to catch and will hit mullet rigs or spoons.  Look for schools off the beach and have a rod at the ready with a spoon or plug to cast for them.  They will be chasing schools of bunker.  Last week some of the schools had decent sized fish in them. We haven’t seen that action for a few days.

The fishing has been decent but not like it usually is especially for flounder. The offshore action for yellowfin and Mahi is very good.  Lot of big eyes hitting the docks too.  shark action out there has been good.  The action has been the Norfolk to Washington canyons.

The water temperatures in the inland bays and surrounding waters has been holding in the mid seventies.  Masseys Landing is fluctuating ten degrees between tides topping out around seventy-four.  High tide is midday around noon this weekend.  Makes for a good day fishing the incoming to the outgoing.  Sea surface temperature at buoy 44009 is seventy degrees.  Have a safe weekend!
