Section of beach normally closed for piping plovers … photo by Amy Conroy

The other day the closed section of drive on beach reopened from Herring Point to Gordon’s Pond.  The piping plover nest there was wiped out a couple of weeks ago by heavy rains and they (the birds) have abandoned the site.  This is the earliest this section has opened in close to twenty years according to Captain Steve Savidge.  Usually this time of year, during the 4th of July holiday weekend the beach is still closed in that area for a few more weeks.  For once there will be more space for surf anglers during this holiday weekend.  It is sad that the bird’s nest was wiped out, but that is the nature of the beast we know as mother nature.  Remember  no stacking is still a new rule, but there is a lot more room on that beach now.  I can’t wait for the point to open in September!  I know where I am going fishing tomorrow.
